UCPH School of Archaeology kick-off retreat
On 28 November a total of 50 archaeologists from the Humanities, Theology, Health and Medical Sciences headed to Comwell Borupgaard in Snekkersten for a two-day retreat. The retreat marked the beginning of the UCPH School of Archaeology.
Researchers working in archaeology, or with archaeological materials and themes are widely dispersed across UCPH’s faculties. Although archaeology can therefore be considered a key area of strength within UCPH, researchers rarely have the opportunity to engage with each other across faculties and even within faculties.
The UCPH School of Archaeology is the result of conversations and meetings dating back to the autumn of 2020 between researchers, department heads and the deans of Humanities, Theology and Health and Medical Sciences, with a view to enhancing collaboration and creating a wider research community as well as strengthening the international profile of archaeology at UCPH.
So far close to 100 researchers have expressed interest in the new endeavor.
The retreat programme included talks, breakout sessions and panel discussions. Some of the questions that shaped the conversations were “What can the School of Archaeology do for you?”, “How can we work across the disciplines?” and “The Archaeologist of Tomorrow: What skills are needed?”
UCPH School of Archaeology is envisioned as an inclusive, bottom-up enterprise and its success is very much dependent on commitment and contributions from the researchers. The retreat was an important and successful first step in collectively developing ideas and planning future initiatives and events.
