The World in the Viking Age

The UCPH School of Archaeology is pleased to welcome four distinguished researchers from Uppsala University, Sweden: Professor Neil Price, Docent Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson, Docent John Ljungkvist and Dr. Sophie Bønding.
During an open lecture, they will present the Uppsala Research Centre for the World in the Viking Age, as well as the new project The Vikings in Asia: Diversity and Distance in the Norse Diaspora.
The Uppsala Research Centre for the World in the Viking Age is founded by the Swedish Research Council 2024-2028 and is a collaborative, interdisciplinary meeting place for the study and public communication of a defining episode in world history: the Scandinavian diaspora that unfolded across Eurasia between c. 750 and 1050 CE.
In 2025, the team's new six-year project, The Vikings in Asia: Diversity and Distance in the Norse Diaspora (VIA), was launched and funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. VIA is an ambitious research project that aims to transform our understanding of Norse activity along both the overland and maritime Silk Roads, as well as the Asian frontiers of the Viking diaspora.
The project is divided into several sub-projects, and some of the case studies currently being investigated by the research team will also be presented.
The presentations will be followed by a reception at the UCPH SoA space 12.4.58.
