Digging, Safeguarding, Leading: Four Decades of Near Eastern Archaeology with Ingolf Thuesen

Ingolf Thuesen is retiring this year. On this occasion, we invite you to a seminar where colleagues and collaborators will reflect on Ingolf's research and his significant contributions to Near Eastern archaeology

After more than four decades at the University of Copenhagen – as a student, professor, and for many years as Head of Department – Ingolf Thuesen will be retiring at the end of this month. His career has been deeply intertwined with the development of Near Eastern archaeology in Denmark and beyond, and his departure marks the close of a remarkable chapter in our department’s history.

Ingolf’s research has ranged widely across the Middle East, with major fieldwork and heritage projects in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Qatar. From excavations at prehistoric sites such as Shkarat Msaied in Jordan, to his leadership in the Al Zubarah Archaeological Project in Qatar (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), he has combined archaeological precision with a strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage. His advisory work with UNESCO, including missions in post-conflict Iraq, reflects his dedication to safeguarding the past under even the most challenging circumstances.

Beyond his field and heritage work, Ingolf has been a mentor, collaborator, and driving force in shaping the department’s academic profile. Colleagues, students, and international partners alike have benefited from his deep knowledge and his ability to connect scholarship with practical heritage management.

To mark his retirement, we invite you to a seminar where friends, colleagues, and collaborators will reflect on his research, his leadership, and his impact on the discipline. The event will conclude with a reception in Ingolf’s honour.

All are welcome to join us in celebrating his achievements, sharing memories, and wishing him well in the next stage of his journey.
